Coolant leaking from the water pump seems to be a common problem for the 97 ZRT''S. I have had this problem myself on my 97 powder extreme.
When I looked at the water pump after a ride I usually had a lot of antifreeze on the plate in the area under the pump.
When I finally removed the cover from the water pump housing I discovered that the cover most likely has a fabrication fault. By the aid of a ruler I discovered that the inside of the cover is not plane, i.e. the top of the walls defining the channel for the o-ring are not lying in a plane. It is the inner wall of the botton of the cover (in the sector between two of the bolt holes) that is to high, and thereby causing the the cover to ride on the top of said wall when it is attached to the housing. This of also the part from where the coolant seems to be coming from. You could say that it is more of the top of the said wall part that lying sealingly against the housing than of the o-ring.
I carefully grinded the exessive goods of the top of the wall by the aid of a ordinary file.
Further, it is not necessary to completely lift the motor off the sled to release the cover. I simply raised the motor a little in the front, using pieces of wood stuffed under the motor. The screws to the cover are most likely stucked. They can easily be damaged, so be careful. I used a impact driver to release them and then a screw driver which fittet exactly into the slot.
Good luck

97 zrt and coolant part II

I've fixed alot of these. The problem is that there is a bushing in the lower case half
that supports the front of the water pump shaft and it wears out and causes
the water pump shaft to wobble. When the waterpump
shaft wobbles it screws
up the seal and thats wear your leakage is coming from. If you keep riding it
sooner or later the seal will blow out and you will loose all of your coolant
and you will cook the motor. Take the motor out of the sled split the cases the bushing
is about six bucks and if the shaft has grooves you will need to replace that also.

Glykol läckage.

Hej !
Lars-Erik du har helt rätt om detta problem som drabbar Trippel 600'an oavsett årsmodell !!
( 95--> )
Men även en av kylarslangarna brukar ställa till en hel del problem.
Har sett 15-talet exemplar med samma fel på en av slangarna.

Varför har du skrivit på engelska ??

zrt 600 and coolant leakage part III

I received this letter from Dave in Minnesota while I discussed the leakage problem at
the free forum of the Am Snowmobiler.

I have never seen a cover leak on a ZRT800 water pump but if yours is not
flat it could be the problem. Have a machinist check the cover for flatness
and either buy a new one or silicon the heck out of it if it is not flat.

If it is not the cover you will have to pull the motor to get at the pump to
replace the seals. This is the only place I have seen a ZRT water pump leak.
There is a double seal that goes in the piece that is behind the cover. I
have never done a ZRT600 but they look real similar and both use the same
seals but the impellar and cover are different part numbers for the 600. Cut
and paste this address http://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/menu11.htmhttp://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/menu11.htm</a>.
It is a web sit that shows all of the parts for all cat models. There is a
drain hole in the bottom of the pump that you can feel with you finger or use
a mirror to look at when the motor is in the sled. This is where coolant
will come out if it is the seal that leaks.

If it is the seal, the factory fix is to replace the seals and the impellar.
Grind .020 off the end of the shaft (this tightens the new impellar on the
shaft and reduces wobble) as well as put a generous amount of red loctite on
the impellar and shaft to bond it to the end of the shaft. Do not put
coolant in the motor for at least 24 hours.

I have done this to two ZRT800's and it works. I live in Minnesota and have
a friend that works at Cat and this is the offical factory fix supplied to
the dealers.

Good luck,

Dave
